I’m not sure about you guys but I know what I’ll be doing on March 9th! Feld Entertainment is bringing Disney Live! Mickey’s Rockin’ Road Show to the National Arts Centre and I’ve got my tickets secured. It’ll be a nice way to pretend we are still at Walt Disney World as we will have just gotten back. It will come as no surprise to anyone who has read this blog for any length of time, that I am a complete geek at heart. I love comics and super heroes, but my real love is in collecting. I have had collections of everything from sports cards and stamps to bar coasters and match packs. I also have a love for coins. I mean, we all like money, but I am talking more about the kind of money that you look at as opposed to spend.

I was excited to hear that the Royal Canadian Mint had a new $20 for $20 collection, and even more excited that it included a Santa Claus coin, designed by Canadian artist Jesse Koreck. This is the perfect opportunity to introduce both of my children to one of my passions and it did not disappoint! The minute the kids say the Santa coin, they screamed “Money!!!” and immediately began plotting how they would spend their new fortunes. Okay, so it didn’t go exactly as I planned but they really loved seeing Santa on their money.

I was fortunate enough to attend the Ottawa Children’s Gala last year and saw, first hand, the amount of good they are doing for our city. That is why I am happy to share their new contest with you, with the Grand Prize being 2 tickets to see the Ottawa Senators host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Dec 7th at the Canadian Tire Centre!

The Ottawa Children’s Gala is the only one of its kind in Ottawa: a formal gala filled with entertainment for both children and adults all in the beautiful setting of the Ottawa Conference and Event Centre. There will be a red carpet, complete with a professional photographer, a classy meal, exciting entertainment and, of course, a dance. The 2014 Ottawa Children’s Gala is being held in support of a program called ‘Plan-It Safe’ of CHEO.

I’d like to thank everyone who entered the HP Loves Dads giveaway. I didn’t expect so many entries and so many touching stories of amazing fathers. While I did read every single one of the entries, I had no part in deciding the winner, other than being the one who selected the panel of judges, who did a great job.

Without further ado, I would like to congratulate the winner of the HP Envy x2 and the HP Envy 120 e-All-In-One Printer, 11 year old, Mason. Here is his story:

“hi! My name is Mason, I am 11 years old and I would like to nominate my Dad for the HP Envy prize package. My mom is helping me with the typing.

My Dad is a great Dad. He used to be in the Air Force but now he works as a manager downtown in Ottawa helping to keep military computer systems working. When I started getting bullied at school last year, my Dad signed us both up for TaeKwonDo classes together, so we could get in good shape and learn to defend ourselves. We go three times a week, even when Dad is tired from work. I have ADHD but my Dad is really patient with me. He tells me that some day soon I will probably grow out of it and not to worry. One of the best things ever was when my Dad took us to Comic Con and we met William Shatner and Patrick Stewart. How awesome is that???

My sister has Down Syndrome and she loves to sing with my Dad and they tell jokes to each other all the time. My oldest sister loves to sing too and Dad taught her how to play guitar. She is really good now.

My Dad uses his computer to help us do our homework, to plan summer vacations together, to print photos of our trips and we also got to see all of these really cool photos sent by Cmdre Hadfield from the space station on Twitter. He takes good care of all of us, even my grandpa and my grandma because they have been sick a lot lately. He buys my Mom flowers and takes her out for dinner sometimes too. His computer is old so I know he would love a new computer and printer. I hope you will pick him for your contest and that you will get to meet him, as he really is a great Dad.

Alright, I admit it. I am hopelessly addicted to Skylanders! From the moment I found out what it was all about, I was itching for my son to get involved with it. Much to my delight, he brought it up first and in my most Dadly voice I told him I would think about it. Secretly I was jumping for joy on the inside! You see, I have a a very addictive collector side to me that I haven’t been able to use since I was a young hockey card collector and I can’t wait to dig into this thing.

I’m incredibly happy to have teamed up with Activision to be able to share a new downloadable Skylanders Giants Homework Pack, that aims to help your child educate YOU on their favourite characters and introduce you to the wonderful world of Skylanders!
