What’s Your Canadian Beef IQ? #LoveCDNBeef

There’s few things that I am ashamed to admit about myself. For honesty’s sake, I am going to share one of those things with you all today. I am terrible with a BBQ. There, I said it!

There are hundreds of excuses I could use to justify my terrible secret but I know that the #1 reason why I can’t BBQ is because I give up way too easily. The first time I ruined a rack of ribs was the last time I attempted them. I constantly burn hamburgers & steak and I don’t even think about trying chicken on there for fear of under cooking it. I’ve even had to throw out good meat because I didn’t know how to properly store it. My apologies to the folks at Rolling Acres Farm in Shawville, Quebec for that last part. They have provided us with all our Canadian Beef for years and we love them!

I think the reasons above are the exact reason why I am a perfect fit as a Brand Ambassador for my friends at Canadian Beef. You know when you go to those fancy recipe websites and the pictures are perfect? That’s not me. In fact, I don’t even visit most of those sites anymore because they mostly only give you ingredients with no real info on HOW to cook the food. If you want a real picture from an average joe who’s trying to find his way around a BBQ, then you’ve come to the right place! Here’s my latest attempt at steak:

Off To A Good Start

Mediocre Finish. Still Delicious Though!

You might be asking yourself at this point, How did this guy get asked to work with Canadian Beef? My answer would be two fold. First off, I am charming and I’m pretty sure they couldn’t resist my beefy advances. Second, I saw this as an excellent opportunity to man up and step up my game to a new level. Guess what? Not 5 seconds into my Canadian Beef experience, I had already learned a pile of new things by hanging out in the Steaks 101 section of the Canadian Beef website. If all they were going to provide me was the following photo, that would have been enough.

Fact is, I haven’t stopped learning since I clicked on the link and I am gaining more confidence with every page I visit. It’s not just steaks either, that just happens to be my favourite type of Canadian Beef. The Canadian Beef website has tons of amazing sections such as Beef 101, Recipes, Nutrition & Health info and finally, my favourite part, a Cooking Lessons page!

It’s not your average cooking lessons either as it literally takes you step by step through the preparation and cooking of your favourites cuts of Canadian Beef. For an amateur cook, this was exactly the type of direction I needed and I’m already chomping at the bit to try my hand at some new things. The next time my BBQ sees me, it’s going to meet an entirely different person!

I’ve already planned out my next mission and surprisingly it’s something I’ve never tried before: Steak & Eggs! I always see it on restaurant menus and think, “You can’t have steak for breakfast!” As it turns out, you can have steak and eggs at any time of the day and I am going to make it happen! I picked up some eggs from Burnbrae Farms and will grab my, now properly stored, steaks from the freezer and I’ll share my results with all of you, good or bad, in a later post!

You know what, I’ll probably make some Egg-Creations too! They are so easy to throw together and are always delicious, especially with bacon and cheese!! You may think all eggs are created equal too, but I assure you that Burnbrae Farms is the place to be for all your Eggalicious needs!

I hope you’ll come back to follow my Beefy journey as I attempt to go from BBQ Dud to Stud! Any and all tips or tricks are appreciated and I hope you’ll leave them in the comments section for me!

If you want more info about Canadian Beef, you can follow along with them on Twitter or you can visit the Beef Info site to get great tips, tricks and recipes! Furthermore, you can hit up Burnbrae Farms on Twitter and Facebook too!

Cheers!

I am participating in the Canadian Beef Ambassador Program for September. All stories and opinions are my own. That should be obvious from the fact that I admitted my BBQ ineptitude.

My @AdultEssentials Vitamin Challenge Wrap Up! Gummies Anyone?

For the past 2 months, I’ve been taking part in the Adult Essentials Men’s Blog Tour! I have to say, I was a little skeptical about the whole thing because I’ve never really been a vitamin kind of guy. In my original post, I had narrowed it down to poor taste, enormous size or laziness; and while I’d like to say it was a combination of the three, it was definitely laziness.

How am I supposed to remember to take a vitamin every single day when I can barely remember to put the same colour socks on before I leave the house for work!? I can’t lie to you all, it was tough remembering at first. Fortunately, after about a week or two I got into a rhythm and never missed a day from that point on. Here’s where my inner child kicks in. Had the vitamins not been in gummy form, I can assure you that I would have stopped taking them, just like every other time I’ve tried to start a vitamin routine. I know, it felt ridiculous even typing that but I absolutely can not stand chewing on chalky vitamins.

Ok, back to my adult side, I have been a shift worker for the past 3 years. I work a horrible 12 hour shift on a 24/7 rotation which makes sleep and nutrition almost impossible. Anyone who has ever sat in a giant office complex alone at 2am, with a stocked room full of chips, chocolate bars, pop and all kinds of other junk will understand what I’m talking about. It’s difficult to stay on top of things when you can’t control your instincts because of exhaustion.

Well, I’m happy to report that after 2 months of taking the Adult Essentials vitamins, my sleeping has improved dramatically! Given, the vitamins can’t make my kids sleep through the night (Ahem, Deb, please work on this) but my problem was always in the getting to sleep part and that has been a breeze lately.

The other thing I have noticed is that my energy levels have been much higher in the last few weeks. I can’t give the vitamins full credit because I implemented an exercise routine at the same time as I started taking them; but it was due to the challenge that I started exercising, so that should bring it full circle in crediting Adult Essentials for the motivation. I’ve been able to stay awake and alert longer since I’ve begun with the vitamin/exercise combo and my kids and I are the ones reaping the benefits of a more active Daddy!

Look At These Before & After Photos! What An Amazing Transformation!

I think it’s also important to note that I am no vitamin expert and had to do some research on the effects of each type of vitamin I was going to take before doing it. I would suggest you do the same or even talk to your doctor before starting a new regimen. I found the Adult Essentials Nutritional Info page to be very helpful in educating me on what each vitamin is responsible for doing.

In closing, I wanted to take a minute to say Thank You to Deb and Stu Lowther, who are the masterminds behind Adult Essentials and also IronKids Gummies. My dealings with them have been nothing but pleasant and I love following and interacting with them on their social media accounts. They are one of the few companies who understand that the best way to reach your target audience, is to treat them as you would like to be treated and it’s no wonder why they are so respected within the blogging community.

It’s been a blast to have been a part of the Adult Essentials Men’s Blog Tour and I’m pleased to report that they have a new customer and friend in me. If you haven’t done so already, I encourage you to go check out Adult Essentials on Twitter and Facebook. Think I’m just kissing up to them? Go ahead and start up a conversation with them and you’ll see what I’m talking about!

Well, what are you waiting for? Get out and at least try the vitamins! They’re Gummies that are good for you, People!

Cheers!

I’m Taking The Adult Essentials Vitamin Challenge

I’m excited to announce that I’ve been chosen to take part in the Adult Essentials Men’s Blog Tour! I’ll be taking their Vitamin Challenge over the next two months, to see if my energy levels and overall health can improve.

I’ve never been a big fan of vitamins. I’m not sure if it’s because of the taste, the enormous size of some of them or just plain old laziness. I recently attended a retirement course offered through my work place (no, I’m not even close to retiring) and they had a doctor come in and tell us about the benefits of vitamins.

It was pretty good timing that the folks at Adult Essentials came knocking at my door so soon after and I decided I’d give it a go. They’ve provided me with a couple months worth of vitamins to try out and I’m excited to get started. I have to admit that I don’t know a lot about vitamins and the different benefits they offer but I’ve done my research and I’m ready to go!

The reason I agreed to do the Adult Essentials Vitamin Challenge is because they come in Gummy form and seeing as how I am a child stuck in a 33 year old’s body, I was definitely excited and intrigued at the prospect of eating what looks like candy for the next little while.

I guess I should tell you a little about myself. I’ve worked a grueling shift at my job for the past three years, that has taken it’s toll on me physically, mentally and pretty much in every other imaginable way. Because of this, I have let myself slip a bit in the last few years. Did you know at one time, I was a very high level fastball player? Those days have long since come and gone. In fact, if you’re new to the blog, you might enjoy the time my Doctor told me that I Was Fat

I am lucky enough to have a free 24 gym at my work and I absolutely know where it is. I was re-routed through it one time in order to get to the cafeteria. It looks nice, I sometimes think about going there while working at 2 in the morning. My sleep is all over the map along with my energy levels and at times, my patience suffers as well.

Point is, I am not the picture of perfect health and I’m ready to start making some changes. If not for myself, certainly for the future of my wife and kids. It all begins today! Adult Essentials has asked that on top of taking the Vitamin Challenge, that I participate in at least 15 minutes of exercise, 3 to 4 times a week. I call that a deal and promise to them, myself and you guys that I will follow through on that!

I won’t bore you with all the details on my height and weight and all that because I don’t need to depress myself right before I get started, lol!

That’s all for me at this time! I hope you’ll take a minute to check out Adult Essentials on Twitter and Facebook and don’t forget to say hi to them for me!

Cheers!!

Hey Canada! by Vivien Bowers (Book Review)

I was happy to help out a Canadian author when I was approached to take a look at a new book called “Hey Canada!”, which is written by Vivien Bowers & illustrated by Milan Pavlovic.

Here’s a brief overview of Hey Canada! from GoodReads:

“Gran has decided that she is taking nine-year-old Alice and eight-year-old Cal on a road trip across Canada “before she’s old and creaky.” With a sparkling combination of poems, silly songs, tweets and blogs, the trio records the trip for readers everywhere to share. Starting in St. John’s Newfoundland, where they have a “find-it” list that includes a moose and an iceberg and going all the way to the Pacific Ocean, the gang in Hey Canada! offers a delightful way to learn about vast, varied, and surprising Canada.

The book combines narrative, poems, photos, comics about historical events such as the battle at Fortress Louisburg, maps (including provincial flags, birds, and flowers), in a lively, easily accessible format. Not only great fun to read, this is a valuable resource for young Canadians and for visitors across the country.”

I didn’t even need to read this book to know that I was going to love it! I am Canadian after all…. The book offers extremely informative descriptions of some of Canada’s greatest places and landmarks. It takes you through Canada, Province by Province and has incredible illustrations by Milan Pavlovic. Seriously, the pictures add so much more to the book than I can describe.

This book is a wonderful addition, not only to a home library, but could be an excellent addition to a classroom as well. There is so much detail and colour that your kids will love reading it, as mine did!

Being from Ottawa, it was a real awakening to see all of the great things that my city has to offer, that all to often get taken for granted. The Museum’s, Parliament Hill and the Rideau Canal to name a few, I really have to get my family out there enjoying it.

I actually think one of my favorite part’s of Hey Canada! was the legend in the back….I know, I know, it’s a very nerd thing to say but it’s true. I really enjoy being able to look something up quickly and a legend is like a book’s form of a CTRL-F search, lol.

I really recommend Hey Canada! to help show your kids and yourself, just how much our great country has to offer!

Here’s a little bit about the author of Hey Canada!, Vivien Bowers:

Vivien Bowers was born in Vancouver, Canada in 1951, the second of four children. She received a B.A. in English (honours) from the University of British Columbia followed by a teaching certificate, and was a grade 5 teacher for several years in Nelson, BC. Vivien has been a freelance writer for more than twenty-five years, writing elementary and secondary school materials, as well as non-fiction books and magazine articles for both adults and children. She has been invited to do presentations on her children’s books in hundreds of schools and libraries across the country. Bowers has two sons, now grown up, and lives at the base of the mountains outside of Nelson, BC. She loves to escape into the wilderness to ski, hike or canoe.

Disney Pixar’s Brave Passes The Ultimate Test

I was fortunate enough to find my way to a screening of Disney/Pixar’s new movie “Brave” in 3D. I had seen about a thousand clips of it with my kids but had no idea what we were in store for as the movie began.

Let’s start with the actual trip to the theater. I went with my 4 year old son, his little girlfriend and her Dad. We got there nice and early, as anyone who has ever been to a screening knows, the lines fill up very early!

We had our dinner’s while standing in line, placed our cell phones in the brown paper bags (because I usually bring my buddy and our kids to the movies with the intention of taping it on my iPhone…) and 3 trips to the bathroom for my little guy….he gets scared in theaters and it makes him have to pee (a Lot).

My son is what you would refer to as a scaredy cat when it comes to watching movies. He hates witches, bad guys & any kind of frightening character, to the point of not wanting to watch anymore. I thought bringing his friend along would be a wise move in attempting to keep him interested.

In case you are one of the few who haven’t seen the clips for this movie yet, here’s a peek!

I’m proud to report that with the exception of a couple of scenes with the ancient bear Mor’du, my son got through the movie relatively unscared! There is a witch in the movie but Disney did a great job of getting away from the traditional scary witch for a sneakier version. Personally, I appreciated that fact as I never understood why they had to make these kids movies so frightening.

The other thing I enjoyed is the relationship the female lead, Merida, has with her father. I thought it was cool that they portrayed them as best friends, which is something as father, I can only hope for with my daughter someday.

I’m not going to ruin any of the story in this review, I just wanted to share my experience from the screening. I have read a lot of reviews from this movie, some good, some bad, some very, very strange, but my personal feeling is that this is an excellent movie for the whole family. The stunning animation alone is worth the price of admission as I feel it’s one of Pixar’s best to date.

Oh Yeah, I almost forgot! In true Pixar form, my son decided that he was going to dress as Finn McMissile for this trip to the movies. One thing I’ve learned is not to bother arguing if he wants to leave the house in costume, lol, Kids Will Be Kids! Plus, he’s just like his Dad!

Brave opened June 22nd and if you haven’t seen it yet, I urge you to check it out as you won’t be disappointed!

Cheers!!

The “I Want Candy!!” Giveaway From Big Sky Brands

I get a lot of email requests asking if I want to do product reviews and giveaways. A LOT!

For the most part (about 98% of the time), I politely decline and move on with my day. Sometimes though, a sales pitch is too powerful for even me to decline. I’m talking about those brilliantly crafted campaigns that leave you stunned and wanting to know more about them! This is a story of one of those times.

The message I received read: “We would like to send you some candy”.

The rest is history! The brilliant company that sent me this glorious pitch was Big Sky Brands and I was happy to be working with them.

For those of you who do not know, Big Sky Brands are the masterminds behind some truly amazing candy, such as:

* Jones Carbonated Candy

* Sunkist Citrus Burst

* Yogen Fruz Smoothies

* Maple Ice Mints

There are so many more but the more I type, the less time I have for eating candy….

I spent a weekend analyzing and tasting the candy that arrived at my doorstep and am ready to give my verdict. They were all amazing! My favorite were the Jones Carbonated Candies, as they seemed to get better as I ate more and more. I also love that all their candy comes in tin casings, which I though was very cool, almost hipster cool but not quite.

Now that I’ve enjoyed the candy for a week, I thought it would be cool to let you enjoy some as well! All you have to do is enter below and all 4 of the candies listed above could be yours! Good Luck!!

And before you ask, I am not advocating feeding your children candy. In fact, just to nail that point home, I did not share any of this candy with them or my wife. Sometimes Daddies need to enjoy the finer things in life too!

Contest is open to Canada Only (Excluding Quebec)

Cheers!!

5 iPhone Apps My Kids Can’t Live Without

Yeah I know, over dramatic post title, right? Well, you try writing a blog and figuring out how to get people to read it, OKAY!

I’m sorry, it’s 1 o’clock in the morning and I have put this one off all day due to being lazy at work.

Still friends? Good!

Back to the point of the story, my kids are ages 2 and 4. I occasionally let them play on my iPhone, as does my wife, and I thought I’d share with other parents out there, the games that keep the kids occupied, while also stimulating their minds…..sometimes.

I get it. Letting the kids watch TV and play video games is lazy parenting. Well, I have some news for you: I’m Not Perfect!

Every now and then, while waiting for our food at a restaurant or after a really tough day at the office, I’m cool with passing the iPhone to one of the kids for a couple hours minutes. It keeps them occupied and in some cases, can even help out in an educational way.

So without further ado, I let you in on the iPhone Apps my kids love to play!

#5 – Talking Bacteria John by Out Fit 7 Ltd. – This is probably the most ridiculous App I’ve ever seen but the kids laugh harder at this one than any they’ve played so it makes the list. It provides no educational or emotional value, unless you count laughing as a value. It’s basically a bunch of blue blobs floating around that repeat everything you say and you can feed them donuts. They also have an infectious and irritating laugh that keeps you coming back for more!

#4 – Sesame Street: The Fix-It Shop by Sesame Workshop Apps – It’s got some cool features like stories and recording and blah, blah, blah. My kids love the coloring book feature on this app. My daughter will play this until I yank it out of her screaming hands! The only issue with this one is that she doesn’t know how to change colors, so she asks every 30 seconds…

#3 – Shape-O by Bellamon – Now we’re getting to the good stuff! This puzzle game is really incredible and I’m so glad my son loves it! There are tons of puzzles, where you not only place the pieces but also have to match the letters in the word before you can move to the next puzzle. This is a great one and I highly recommend it!

#2 – Garage Band by Apple Canada Inc. – The funny thing about this one is that it was MY app for my band. We are able to share new sounds and vocals through this app and it’s very useful for our music. And then my kids heard me playing on it and stole it from me. Now my son and daughter fight tooth and nail to see who is going to get to pay drums and keyboard and guitar! I secretly love that they love the music because that’s something I can share with them. It came out of nowhere but this one is great for kids to make and record music.

#1 – Angry Birds by Rovio Mobile – Was there any doubt about this one? It’s the classic time wasting game and the kids love it! I don’t even know what to say about this game that you don’t already know. Addictive is the word I would use to describe it. Like I always say, “When in doubt, Kill some green pigs!”

That’s it for my list. I wasn’t paid by any of these companies, nor do I ever plan to be, lol. My kids just love these games and I thought other lazy parents could benefit from the recommendations.

Honorable mentions to Flick Home Run, Cars 2 & Talking Tom & Ben News. All great in their own way but just not quite loved enough to make the Top 5!

I hope you enjoyed the list and please feel free to share your favorite apps in the comments section!

Cheers!

I Can’t Wait For @Disneyland To Open #CarsLand This June!

I want to start by saying a couple things here. First, I have no affiliation with Disney, Disneyland, Pixar, Mickey Mouse, Owen Wilson, Lightning McQueen or any other Disney entity. I’m just really excited about this new park they are opening. Cars is my favorite Disney movie so this one looks like a dream I once had, where I was in the movie!

The Second thing is that I will most likely never be able to afford to take my family to this theme park. That doesn’t mean I can’t still be excited about it and live vicariously through those who are actually going to experience it!

I first heard of Cars Land around Christmas of last year and thought it was a joke at the time. That was until I started Google searching it and found hundreds of images of blueprints. I was amazed at how much it looked just like the real Radiator Springs.

As more and more clips come out, my excitement level rises higher and higher! I have failed so far in my attempts to convince my wife that we NEED to go here. Understandably, once we are able to afford it, our family will most likely travel to Disney World instead, which will be fun as well. I guess. It’s definitely cheaper than a family trip to California, so I get it.

Seriously though, look at the photos and videos! They’re all there! Flo’s V8 Cafe, The Cozy Cone Motel, Mater, McQueen, Fillmore, Sarge!! It’s an overload of awesomeness and I can’t stop torturing myself with the videos and images that are out there! The best tour I’ve found so far is the one provided by my buddy Mater on the actual Cars Land website.

Out of respect and fairness to my wife, I have not showed my son any of the pictures and videos that I have been watching. That would be like using WMD’s in my fight to get my family to Cars Land and I’m not going to do it! I’ll just keep picking away until it simply becomes the thing we HAVE to do! In the meantime, I will watch my videos and read the blogs of the lucky families who get to roam the streets of Radiator Springs!

I think I’ll leave you with a couple of my favorite Cars Land videos to date. The first one is great because it explains some of the amazing features the new park is going to have. The second one is for me, lol! I hope you enjoy them as much as I have and maybe I’ll see you there someday!

KACHOW!
