AIR MILES AMEX

Confessions Of An AIR MILES Enthusiast

There are things we admit to people and there are some things that we keep inside (like that time you decided that you really did like that new One Direction song), but some things you just need to be said. When it comes to the way I experience the AIR MILES program, there’s nothing I like more than educating my friends and family on the benefits of the program.

You see, I am what you call obsessive compulsive. When my daughter said she loved Beanie Boos, I bought every last one I could find. The same story can be told with my son and his short lived Pokémon addiction. Luckily, Toys “R” Us gives AIR MILES so I at least got something in return for the $$$ I dropped on those toys. When I get my head stuck on something I can’t stop until I have satisfied my craving for it. That is how I feel about my AIR MILES reward miles and that is why I am okay with admitting the following two points of excitement I find when using my AIR MILES Collector Card alongside my American Express AIR MILES Credit Card.

1. When I find out about new AIR MILES sponsors

There is a Sobeys just down the street from my house and although I would sometimes venture farther to different grocery stores, it was often more convenient to walk up to the Sobeys with the kids. Well, on one of our trips last month we received a pamphlet in our grocery bag informing us that Sobeys would be converting their point system to AIR MILES.

I excitedly turned to the people in line behind me hoping that they would share in the joy I was feeling and possibly partake in the age old tradition of the slapping of the fives. They didn’t show it and there were no fives slapped but I just assumed that my excitement had intimidated them. I may have also literally jumped for joy when I realized that I had not used a single Sobeys point in the 4 years I had been shopping there, which meant that I was due a sizable chunk of AIR MILES from the points conversion.

Side Note: I may or may not have also caught myself fist-pumping when I saw the 5X AIR MILES bonus reward miles at the Shell station the other day… I wish I was making this stuff up for dramatic effect.

2. When I got my new AIR MILES Onyx member Card

With the help of my American Express AIR MILES Credit Card, I joined an elite level of the AIR MILES Collectors program this past year when I reached Onyx status. With that membership came a lot of special perks, including amazing discounts on Dream Rewards, but all the perks paled in comparison to my shiny new black Onyx AIR MILES Card.

Honestly, I was so excited to test it out that I drove to the nearest AIR MILES partner (LCBO) grabbed a bottle of my favourite wine and excitedly handed over my Onyx Card to the cashier. As they held the Card in their hands I waited with anticipation for them to compliment me on my sleek new card, but they simply scanned it and passed it back without looking up. Assuming it was some kind of mistake; I drove to the next closest shop and proudly passed them my Onyx Card. Same result.

You’d think this would be enough to deter me but I am extremely stubborn. I now find myself trying new tactics with the store clerks as I pass my Onyx Card to them including, but not limited to, uncomfortable smiles, accidentally dropping it so they have to look at it, explaining its origins without being asked and giving them the wink and double finger guns as they scan it. None of these tactics have been successful so far but I am maintaining hope that the day will come where someone will compliment my new card.

Why am I so obsessive when it comes to AIR MILES, you ask? The answer is simple. Last year I earned enough AIR MILES to purchase almost all of my Christmas presents PLUS a flight to Washington for the Dad 2.0 Summit. The estimated retail value of my redemptions was almost $1100, for only one year’s worth of reward miles!

Achieving this goal was relatively easy. When you combine your AIR MILES Collector Card with the American Express AIR MILES Credit Card you can earn twice on all purchases from AIR MILES Sponsor stores. Aside from that, every time you use your Amex AIR MILES Credit Card, regardless of the store, you still earn AIR MILES on your purchases. Combine that with smart store selection and the points will start piling up in no time.

I should also point out that I pay the annual fee for a higher level Credit Card and the miles easily outweigh the cost of the fee. You use a Credit Card anyway, right? Why would you only collect half the miles you could be getting by only using the AIR MILES Collector Card? That would be like eating a sundae without a spoon or driving without a steering wheel. Go, check out the American Express AIR MILES Credit Card and thank me when you are flying somewhere exotic from all the points you earned!

Cookina Grilling Sheet

I Grilled The Perfect Steak With The Cookina Grilling Sheet, However…

…I may have been so excited about the fact that I was cooking a steak at 2 o’clock in the afternoon that I forgot to document the experience for this blog post. You see, I have teamed up with Cookina on their new “#WhatsOnYourGrill” program and part of that program is trying out their Cookina Barbecue Reusable Grilling Sheet.

Cookina Barbecue Logo

A little background on my barbecue skills. They are not great. I usually blame the barbecue because everything I put on there seems to burn. When I chose the steak it was because I wanted to hit the Cookina Barbecue Reusable Grilling Sheet by surprise instead of lobbing it a softball and it exceeded my every expectation. I usually tend to opt for funny over an actual product review but my steak was grilled so perfectly that I can’t say enough good things about the Cookina Grilling Sheet.

Cookina Grill Sheet

I even had the confidence to invite my family over for a barbecue dinner tonight, which is something that I would normally never do, and the food turned out great! Sure it was only hamburgers with grilled onions but nothing burned because the Cookina Grilling Sheet kept all the juices, sauces and cheese from dripping down into the barbecue, reducing the flame up and more importantly, the clean up. Also, I was able to simply wipe the grilling sheet clean and store it away until my next barbecue adventure. I mean, look at these bad boys!

Cookina Hamburgers

I’m not sure what else I can say about this grilling sheet. If it turns an amateur griller like myself into a wiz, imagine what it could do for the advanced grill master. I wish words could accurately convey how excited I am to finally have the confidence to take on bigger challenges with my barbecue. I think my mom summed it up best while I raced about the Cookina Barbecue Reusable Grilling Sheet when she asked, “Is there a hidden infomercial going on here?”. No, mom, just a grill master in the making!

I have seen the Cookina Reusable Sheets at places like Sobeys and Canadian Tire and highly encourage you to try them out. I have also included the video below because I got so excited watching it that I wanted you to see how I imagine myself in a few weeks with these Cookina grilling sheets… So, #WhatsOnYourGrill???

Disclosure: I received compensation for my participation in this program but my confidence level really is bordering on arrogance now that I have found these grilling sheets.

Shreddies Search For Goodness

Nominate a Fellow Canadian & Join the Shreddies “Search for Goodness”!

I am a huge fan of volunteerism and in giving back to society. It’s something I hope to instill in my children the way my parents did for me. We already got them started on the right foot when my extended family helped found the Gil Read Memorial Foundation in honour of my father, to help give back to kids who can’t afford to play organized sports. Every year we host a fastball tournament and the kids love to participate.

That’s why I was thrilled to team up with Post Shreddies to help promote their “Search for Goodness” campaign. The “Search for Goodness” is a national search to recognize individuals for their selfless commitment to their community. Shreddies believes Canada is full of people striving to do good for others and want to recognize those who make a difference in their community. Canadians are backing up that belief as well:

• Almost 70 per cent volunteer their time to help someone they know with things like errands and snow removal
• Of those who volunteer, 60 per cent volunteer for a local, community-based organization
• More than 90 per cent feel a sense of pride and goodness after they volunteer
• Almost 90 per cent agree that volunteerism is an important function in building a strong community
• Over half of Canadians encourage their children to volunteer
• 86 per cent of Canadians think that young people who volunteer are more likely to grow into genuinely good adults

How Can You Participate in the Shreddies “Search for Goodness”?

If you know someone from your family or community who goes above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of others, here’s how you can share their story and give them the recognition they deserve.

Nominations can be submitted by visiting searchforgoodness.ca before May 10, 2015. Once a person has been nominated, Canadians can vote for their favourite story once a day to help the nominee make it into the top 10 finalists. The top 10 stories will make the shortlist of nominees, and the winner will be selected by a panel of judges at Post Foods Canada Inc. The winning story will be told in a Post Shreddies’ ad.

Full contest rules are available at www.searchforgoodness.ca and on the Shreddies Facebook Page

The Duckvengers

Watch The Epic Trailer For The Duckvengers & Win Stuff Too!

I receive a lot of pitches in my inbox every day and the first thing I think to myself as I read them is “Can I do something fun with this?”. The answer came quickly when Pringles asked me to be a part of their new #PringlesDuckLip campaign. Basically they wanted me to shove chips in my mouth and act goofy for a video. Anyone who reads this blog knows that this essentially describes who I am.

We worked together as a family to create a trailer for a new movie called, The Duckvengers, in honour of the release of the new Avengers movie this weekend. Scripts were written and re-written, costumes were fought over and mediocre movie editing skills prevailed to create the masterpiece you are about to watch below. Once you have finished the video you can scroll down to find out how you can win a Pringles prize pack! Enjoy!

I know. Kids, right? Ah well, we had fun goofing around with the costumes either way. Now, onto the good stuff!

Netflix Lies

Netflix Is Filled With Lies

Link bait is also a form of lying, isn’t it? Well, now that I have you here let me explain myself. I recently agreed to sign on with Netflix to be a part of their Stream Team, which means that every month I will be talking about the shows my family is watching and sharing some of Netflix’s suggestions with you.

My first month happened to be an eventful one as I had the chance to pre-screen a few episodes of Marvel’s Daredevil and then proceeded to watch the entire 13 episode season in under 4 days… If you have been on the fence about this show, it is seriously time to hop off and watch it. It is incredibly dark and violent, which was actually a plus when compared to some of the other comic book shows on cable right now.

My wife and I also just started watched a show called White Collar and definitely recommend it so far, especially if you enjoy watching something like Suits. And speaking of Suits, I want to say that my wife and I are patiently watching for Season 4 to arrive on Netflix but there is no patience in this house…other than with our kids, of course.

As far as lying goes, Netflix has you covered with classics like Liar, Liar and one of my personal favourites, Mean Girls. I’ve also been told that the next show on our watch list, Bloodline, centers around lies and we can’t wait to hit it up!

That’s it for this month but stay tuned as I will be sharing more of my family’s favourite Netflix titles in the months to come! Stream on!

GoodLife Begin DadFit

Project #DadFit – New Beginnings

Here we are again at this old familiar territory. Things were looking up for a while. I ran my first official 5K, was working out and running 5-6 days a week and even started eating healthier. I had never felt better in my life, mentally and physically, but I have let it all slip through my fingers. Now I sit here on the couch watching Real Housewives of (insert city here) because I’m too lazy to bother looking for the remote control, and I am not proud of myself at all.

All is not lost, however. I have faltered and regained footing before and I know that I can do it again. In fact, my new beginning starts today! My family were excited to welcome a video crew from GoodLife Fitness to our house this month so that I could share my story and struggles with staying fit. It’s not always easy to talk about our shortcomings but I do so with the hope that it will inspire me to work harder and possibly strike a chord in others who are dealing with the same struggles.

The GoodLife Fitness video is about Beginnings and I am really happy with how it turned out. Today is Monday, April 27th and on top of being my daughter’s birthday (Happy Birthday, Baby) this is the day that I begin my journey to a better me.

Kids Video Camera

Two Kids, Their Toys And A Video Camera

My wife and I recently bought a new camera and we decided to give our old camera to the kids. We taught them how to take pictures and thought it would be funny to check back in to see what they came up with. In my wildest dreams I couldn’t have imagined that they would have figured out how to shoot their own videos, but they did…

After marveling at their work, I plucked my favourite video off the memory card and loaded it up onto the YouTube. Without further ado, I present to you a short film by my children entitled, “Nice To Meet You”. Enjoy and never underestimate your children!

Dyson Cinetic DC77 Multi Floor

3 Things The Dyson Cinetic DC77 Vacuum Doesn’t Do Well

I have always wanted a fancy Dyson vacuum cleaner so when the opportunity to take one for a test drive came about, I jumped at the chance. In my head this was a device that could do no wrong but as I tried it out in different areas of my life, I learned that there were some things that it just could not do.

Here is my list of the Top 3 things that the Dyson Cinetic DC77 Multi Floor device could not handle.

1. Children’s Bedtime Stories

I mean, honestly, it’s not like I was asking the Dyson to shower the kids as well. All I needed it to do was to take care of the kids bedtime stories so that I could flip the laundry (a task it also failed at, by the way). When I heard my daughter crying, I entered her room to find the Dyson DC77 just lying in her bed pretending to sleep. Strike #1.

2. Designated Driver

Every now and then I like to go out for drinks with my friends and I figured the “multi” tag that the Dyson Cinetic DC77 carries meant that I had a full time designated driver. Wrong! I guess I should have clued in when Dyson just sat in the car the whole time I was hanging out with my friends. As the car sped through a pile of garbage cans and right into my garage door, I knew I had put the car in the wrong hands.

Dyson Cinetic DC77 Driving

3. Road Hockey Goalie

Picture this. Tied at 9 in a next goal wins situation against my 6 year old and he is in on a breakaway. All the Dyson has to do is make one save but it doesn’t even move an inch as my son easily stickhandles around him and taps the ball in for the winning goal. Do you have any idea how embarrassing it is to lose to your 6 year old in a hockey game?! I used to be good at hockey!!!

Dyson Cinetic DC77 Goalie

Luckily for the Dyson Cinetic DC77 Multi Floor Vacuum it does do one thing better than any other vacuum I have ever owned. It makes me look like a superstar cleaner and it does so with ease. One of my favourite features is the self-adjusting cleaner head because it picks up the dirt that sneaks between the hardwood floor boards and with little ones in the house there is a lot of it… I also love that the hose stretches from my main floor all the way to the top step on the second level. Anyone who has lugged a vacuum step by step up the stairs knows how valuable that feature is!

I guess when I really think of it, the one thing the Dyson Cinetic does really well kind of outweighs the things I was picking on above. You get what you pay for, folks, and the Dyson Cinetic DC77 Multi Floor Vacuum delivers in every way. Check out the links above to see more details and information on where to pick yours up today.

Disclosure: I got to keep the Dyson Cinetic vacuum I received in order to facilitate this blog post. It really did stink at driving the car and I wouldn’t recommend trying it. Also, I got through this entire post without making a joke about how the vacuum sucks. D’oh!

Harlem Globetrotters Family

What Do You Do When A Harlem Globetrotter Rings Your Doorbell?

The other day we were fortunate enough to have a special visitor in our home. His name is Zeus McClurkin and he is a member of the Harlem Globetrotters! The Globetrotters will be playing at the Canadian Tire Centre at 3pm on April 12th and Zeus thought it would be fun to stop by to shoot around with my kids and to teach them some new tricks. Check out the video of our experience and then read on to find out why these guys are my new favourite show to see with the kids.

I’ve always been amazed at how long the Globetrotters have been able to sustain their show, especially considering all the distractions today’s world offers our children. After watching Zeus interact with not only my kids but also all the neighbourhood kids that gathered around, I am no longer surprised by this. He brought autographed pictures for every kid in the neighbourhood and took the time to pose for photos until everybody had one.

As Zeus was leaving, my daughter chased him down the street yelling, “Huggy, Huggy!”, with her arms outstretched. That’s the kind of impact these guys and gals have on kids and that’s why we will never miss another Globertrotters show. If you are interested in attending the show in Ottawa on April 12th, you can enter promo code DADS to get 25% off your purchase. Go, now!
