Bees Matter Honey Bee

If You Love Food, You Should Thank A Honey Bee

A few weeks ago, I talked about why bees are more important than we think and now I’m going to talk a little bit about just how much of the food we eat is pollinated by honey bees. I just want to pre-warn you that it is a lot more food than I could have imagined when I started doing the research.

Before we get to that list, let’s talk about what you can do to make sure that the honey bee population continues to live productive lives. The good news is that despite what you may have heard, there is no decline in the population of the honey bee in Canada. In fact, according to Statistics Canada, their population is at an all-time high! That said, it is still up to us to help them thrive and we can do so by planting pollinator-friendly gardens. Check out this short YouTube video which describes the life cycle of a honey bee.

How To Get Your Free Seed Kit!

The Bees Matter ‘Buzzing Gardens’ program allows you to order a free seed kit to start a buzzing garden of your own. Simply head over to BeesMatter.ca, sign up for your free seed kit and get planting! I used this as a learning experience for my daughter and we’ve loved watching the bees come and go, knowing that we’ve had a small hand in pollinating the food that we eat.

Speaking of food… I promised that I would give you a list of some of the crops that are pollinated by the bees. The following is just a small sample of some of the foods we love but you’ll get the picture. If you love any of these foods, go ahead and give a big hug and kiss to the next honey bee you see!
